September 6, 1997 will be the 80th birthday of Mikhail Fedorovich Zhukov. M.F. Zhukov is a prominent scientist and organiser, the head of the plasmadynamics department in the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS. He graduated from Moscow State University (specially 'Mechanics') in 1941. He started working as an engineer in the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute named by Zhukovsky. In 1946-1959 he was the head of the department in the Central Institute of Airplane Engines. From 1960 until now Mikhail F. Zhukov has been working in the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Zhukov's fundamental investigations in the fields of gasdynamics and low-temperature plasma are well-known in Russia and abroad. The scope of his scientific interests is very wide: supersonic compressors, new types of wind tunnels, near-electrode processes, electrode erosion, heat transfer, and arcing stability, etc.

Zhukov's scientific school on plasma dynamics is known among both Russian and foreign investigators. M.F. Zhukov was a pioneer of complex experimental investigations of low-temperature plasma generators. He and his disciples were the first involved in the study of some fundamental physical processes in electric arc plasma. He developed a universal system of similarity criteria and estimated the significance of these values under specific arcing conditions. He elaborated the arcing theory in a laminar flow. His engineering methods for calculations of electric and thermal characteristics of electric arc plasma have a wide application in the development of laboratory and industrial apparatuses.

Zhukov's team made numerous investigations concerning near-electrode processes, heat transfer through the arc spot, 'splitting' of the closing radial part of an arc in linear plasmatrons. They also inquired the problem of stability of multi-arc system operation without a ballast resistance in the electric circuit. These studies allowed the development of highly effective linear plasmatrons and high-current cathode units with a long operation time in different gas media. Twenty years ago he put forward a hypothesis about the recirculation of cathode material's atoms close to the surface. This was discovered later in experiments. It was a specific case, but it opened a way to the whole problem solution. Now a whole class of high-resource cathodes was developed, and the nonerosion cathode working in a carbon-containing media is among them.

Powerful high-enthalpy arcing plasma generators with inter-electrode insertions were developed under the supervision of M.F. Zhukov. Now they are widely used in plasmachemical technologies. There were great achievements in the production of ultrafine powder of high-heat compounds, synthesised in plasmachemical reactors. These powders are used also in metallurgy for improvement of physical and mechanical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

M. Zhukov's intuition and his vision of future conditioned the appearance in the 1980s of a new scientific and technological direction - plasmadynamics of dispersed systems. His achievements conditioned the progress in plasma-jet spraying with powder coatings and compositions. His team made a great contribution into the investigation and practical realization of plasma (no-fuel-oil) igniter in the grid-coal power stations.

The popularisation of science achievements and their applications have receive sufficient attention from M. Zhukov. He writes and speaks about different subjects: plasma for a powder spraying, metal cutting and processing, waste treatment, recirculation of toxic waste into a serviceable product, etc. He often speaks with lectures in engineer public, on scientific-practical workshops, on radio and TV. Thus, he propagandised the whole range of possible practical applications of electric-arc thermal plasma in new technologies.

M.F. Zhukov is the author of many books and articles. With his participant and under his editing, the whole series of famous maintenance books with plasmatron constructions has been published. Soon the publication of 20-volume series 'Low-Temperature Plasma' will be finished. Many of these books became the table-books for researchers and specialists in the field of low-temperature plasma. These editions became a theoretical basement for design and manufacturing of high-efficiency equipment for new plasma technologies.

Mikhail Zhukov is a man of wide interests. Besides the establishing of serious investigations, he is an organiser and participant of conferences and workshops on the gas-discharge plasma for almost forty years.

From 1975 until 1980 M.F. Zhukov was a Chief Scientific Secretary of the Presidium SB RAS. He was the editor-in chief of the journal 'Communications of SB AS USSR' for 15 years, and he is a member of editorial board in the 'Contributions to Plasma Physics'. Mikhail F. Zhukov is an Academician of the International Energy Academy, a Honourable Academician of the Engineering Sciences Academy. Great services of M.F.Zhukov in the development of science and education of our country are recorded with government and academic awards.

Now M.F. Zhukov is the head of the plasmadynamics department of ITAM SB RAS. He is absorbed with new creative plans and aspirations. His colleagues, friends, scientific community of Akademgorodok, and participants of the Workshop sincerely congratulate Mikhail Zhukov with this anniversary and wish him creative and physical longevity. Let all his dreams and ideas come true for the sake of Russian prosperity.

The 3rd International Workshop "Thermal Plasma Torches and Technologies" is dedicated to 80th anniversary of Prof. Dr.-Eng., Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail F. Zhukov a founder of the Former Soviet and now Russian School on Thermal Plasma Science and Technology due to his 80th anniversary. The Workshop will takes place 25-29 August 1997. The 3rd International Workshop continues the series of the international meetings since the 1st Symposium in Novosibirsk, Russia in 1988 and the 2nd one in Frunze (Bishkek), Kyrgyzstan in 1990.

Weather and Travel Information:

"The Capital of Siberia" Novosibirsk is situated 3000 km to the East from Moscow on banks of the Ob' river. The time difference is +3 hours to Moscow. The weather in Siberia is rather warm at the end of August, but warm jacket may be of use.

Please communicate us the flights schedule of your travel to arrange your meeting at the airport in Novosibirsk. Twice a week there is direct flight from Frankfurt to Novosibirsk by Lufthansa. There is direct flight from Beijing to Novosibirsk. The participants arriving at Novosibirsk airport will be provided with transportation to the hotel.


Excursions and Social Program:

Visits to facilities of the Institutes of Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences will be organized. Excursions to Geological Museum, Opera House in Novosibirsk, sightseeing tours etc. are planned for participants of TPTT'97.


Registration fee:

The Organizing Committee will cover most part of the expenses connected with organization of the Workshop so that the registration fee will be not much then 200 USD (for the foreign participants) and 40 USD (for the participants from CIS). This registration fee will covers one copy of the Materials of the Workshop, welcome reception, banquet, excursions, social program and coffee-breaks.
